The Rajasthan Kayamkhani Mahasabha on Sunday decried attempts by a
section of the community to run a parallel body with the “bogus claims”
of leadership and said creating doubts about the validity of recent
elections would put roadblocks in the community's development.
Kayamkhani Mahasahba president Bahadur Khan said at a
press conference here that the office-bearers were elected in the polls
held at Deedwana on June 12 after the June 6 elections conducted at
Bisau were disrupted by “certain people with vested interests”.
Kayamkhani Muslims – converts from the Rajput community –
are concentrated in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. They have a
strong presence in the police, para-military and defence forces, with a
large number of them serving in the Kayamkhani Regiment of the Army.
Mr. Khan, a retired police officer, said a section of
the community dissatisfied with the results of elections held after a
gap of six years was trying to mislead the people by claiming that a
crisis had arisen in the Mahasabha and demanding fresh elections within
six months.
“These influential people are controlling the
community's resources and institutions and not allowing the Mahasabha to
function normally. The Kayamkhani Mahasabha has been left without funds
and a regular office,” said Mr. Khan.
Mahasabha patron Mohammed Hanif and general secretary
Ayyub Khan said the “wrangling within the community” would adversely
affect the work for social, economic and educational uplift of
Kayamkhanis who were backward on all indicators even after six decades
of Independence.
“The biggest challenge before us is to get the community
listed as an Other Backward Class for the Central services. The OBC
status in the State has not yet benefited Kayamkhanis on the expected
scale,” said Mr. Hanif , a retired District and Sessions Judge. In the
June 12 polls, Iqbal Khan Ajmer was elected the Mahasabha's
vice-president, Iqbal Khan Mangyasar secretary, Taj Khan Jajod treasurer
and Liaqat Khan Chungi the president of the Mahasabha's youth wing.
